Falodun, who gave this advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja said that non sterilisation of the instruments could cause fungal foot infections.

He therefore advised people to apply basic hygiene rules in caring for their feet.

The dermatologist said that people should avoid sharing shoes, particularly those whose occupation required them to  such as factories workers and medical workers.

“As much a possible shoes should not be shared, if your occupation requires you to share shoes, please personalise it so you do not get fungal infection.”

He said that people should avoid walking bare feet to avoid injury to the feet, particularly the soles of the feet.

The dermatologist advised that sucks should be washed regularly, saying, “you do not wait till your socks smells before you wash them. ’’

He added that people who sweat a lot on their feet should ensure their socks were washed daily or every other day.

Falodun said that tight shoes should also be avoided as it could cause corns and calluses to develop on the toes.

According to MedicineNet, an online medical journal, corns and calluses are annoying and sometimes painful thickenings that form in the skin in areas of pressure, especially the feet.

Falodun said that cons and calluses affected women more and people who wear tight fitting shoes, individuals with sweaty feet, and those who stood for long periods each day.

He advised women to avoid wearing high heeled shoes for too long because it could cause orthopaedic issues later in life.

“Some women will begin to complain of back pain or pain in the joints as a result of high heeled shoes.

“ Everyone should know what works for them and do everything in moderation.’’

Falodun said that shoes should be aired in the sun regularly, adding that shoes that were not used for a long time should be cleaned properly before being used.

The dermatologist said that the softeners and moisturisers should be applied to the feet regularly to prevent them from cracking. (NAN)
