Dr Durojaiye Korede, a Gynaecologist at the National Hospital Abuja on Friday said that heavy menstrual flow was sometimes due to fibroid in women.
Korede told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that fibroid in women was as a result of hormonal imbalance which disrupts their menstrual flow.
According to him, menstruation is the shedding of the uterine lining which occurs on monthly basis during the reproductive age of women.
“Menstrual flow is considered abnormal when the flow changes frequently or it is irregular.
“If your period is between two and seven days interval, or for about four to five days, it is normal for a cycle, but when you start noticing that you bleed for about a week continuously, that is an irregular menstrual cycle.’’
Korede said that the effect of hormonal imbalance could result in scanty period, heavy and complete seizure of menses.
He said that a woman in her child-bearing age, menstrual cycle could also change, hence the need to be apprehensive of irregular cycle.
“Women should get worried when their menses become irregular as the quality of a woman’s eggs declines with age regardless of how healthy she is,’’ he said.
According to Korede, women suffering from fibroids can also be infertile if not properly treated.
He said that complications of abortion could lead to scanty periods, adding that overweight, depression, and high blood pressure could also be linked to irregular menstrual cycle.
Speaking on the management of irregular menses, Korede said women needed to present themselves for routine checks.
“A regular and normal cycle may not ensure good quality eggs, or a healthy reproductive system.
“Women can still see their periods normally, and be having problems with their ovaries and fallopian tubes, hence the need to always visit the gynaecologist regularly for routine checks.”
He advised pregnant women to eat healthy meals to stay in shape and to improve their chances of getting pregnant again whenever they wanted.
Korede said that women needed to keep their sexual health in check by doing cervical examinations to check for irregularities and infections in the reproductive system. (NAN)
