The young beat maker was inspired by Jay Z and Timberland.
A 16-year old Canadian-Nigerian, Ebony Oshunrinde, also known as WondaGirl, has found herself launched into the limelight after being credited as a producer on one of rapper entrepreneur, Jay Z’s songs, Crown, off his latest album, Magna Carta Holy Grail.
“It’s a really good feeling,” Ebony said, “I want to show young people that they can do it. Anybody can be successful. It doesn’t matter where you’re from.”
Coincidentally, Ebony was inspired to become a music producer at the age of nine after watching a video of Jay Z and prolific producer, Timbaland, working in the studio. She began to teach herself how to create beats by watching video tutorials on YouTube.
In 2012, the young beat-maker won Toronto’s Battle of the Beat Makers competition and subsequently an exclusive contract with an artiste management agency, Blackbox.
The beat she provided for Crown is based on a sampled reggae song which she modified using computer software. After creating the beat, she sent it to her friend, producer and rapper, Travis Scott, to review. Jay Z, who happened to be in the studio when Travis received the beat, liked it and chose for it to be on his album.
“It’s amazing to see somebody with that much talent working as hard as she can to make the most of it at such a young age,” said Ian Stanger, a representative with Black Box. “It’s her work that people should be paying attention to, not the fact that’s she 16”
