Students from public universities in Burundi on Wednesday began an “all-out” strike to protest against the difficult access to bursary under new regulations, according to union sources.
The new legal provisions of bursary and internship envisage, among other things, to review financial support “to scholarship holders repeating the academic year” and the strict implementation of the principle “no class, no bursary”, to stop idling.
Moreover, those studying abroad who refuse to return home would have to pay back the scholarship in full with penalties.
The authorities of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research maintain that the strike was without basis and they would evoke the regulations in case of disruption of academic activities. (PANA/NAN)
