PIC. 18. PEOPLE ON BOARD A TRAIN IN LAGOS ON TUESDAY (16/10/12).Mr Akin Osinowo Regional General Manager, Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), Lagos, has appealed to public-spirited individuals and corporate organisations to invest in rail transport to reduce passenger over-crowding.

Osinowo made the appeal in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Lagos.

He said such investment would stop the recurrent over-crowding in the district’s Mass Train Transit (MTT) services which often result in some passengers hanging and sitting atop moving trains.

“The district runs 16 trips per day under its Mass Train Transit (MTT) services, and this can be doubled with massive investment by individuals and corporate bodies.

“With this, people can spread their journey, while over-dependence on particular trips will not be there. If you miss one, another will be coming few minutes later.

“We are limited by the amount of coaches that we have,’’ he said.

Osinowo said that the infrastructure on ground required massive investment to increase their number to aid frequency of service.

“Even the infrastructure that we have can only have one line, and you can understand that it can also affect the frequency of trips,’’ he added.

Osinowo, however, said that the corporation was making effort to repair its loop lines where trains could cross.

“We only have a single line; so the more loop lines we have, the more train we can run,’’ he said.

He said that the repair of loop lines would be with the assistant of SURE-P.

He promised improved services, adding that the corporation was looking forward to acquiring more locomotives and coaches to serve commuters better. (NAN)
