1,039 VVF patients receiving treatment in Nigeria-Minister

ONYEBUCHI CHUKWU, ADDRESSING OFFICIALS AND EXPERTS  AT THE WORLD MALARIA DAY IN ADDIS ABABA, ETHIOPIA, ON THURSDAY (25/4/13).The Minister of Health, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu, said on Friday  in Kaduna that 1,039 Visco -Vaginal Fistula (VVF) patients are undergoing  treatment for the ailment.

Chukwu said this at the formal handing over of the Katsina VVF Centre in ‘’Babbar-ruga’’ to the Federal Government.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the centre was renamed National Obstetric Fistula Centre, Katsina at the ceremony.

He said there are two VVF centres in Abakalaki and Katsina, the capital of Katsina State.

The minister said it was the Katsina State government that requested that the Federal Government take over the centre which was approved by President Goodluck Jonathan.

He said the government would continue to improve on maternal and child health care service delivery nationwide to combat the ailment.

Gov. Ibrahim Shema thanked the Federal Government for taking over the operations of the  VVF centre.

Shema, who was represented by the Deputy Governor, Alhaji Abdullahi Faskari, reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to providing rural communities access to health care services. (NAN)
