The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) is to honour its pioneer graduates at the 2013 Founder’s Day ceremony, a statement from the institution has said.
The Communication Secretary to the Vice-Chancellor, Mr Gabriel Ndu, said in the statement in Enugu on Wednesday that the 150 graduates in 1963 would be honoured by the institution as part of activities to mark the ceremony scheduled for between Oct. 1 and Oct. 7.
“The UNN was opened with 220 students in 1960 but 150 students graduated in 1963,’’ Ndu said.
He quoted the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Bartho Okolo, as saying that it was a thing of honour for the university to have produced its first graduates three years after it was established in 1960.
Okolo also said the institution would be pleased to honour its pioneer graduates who started the university’s journey to restoring the dignity of man.
He said the university had set up a 12-member committee to organise the 50th anniversary of its first graduates.
“I hope you will do this with your very best. We all know your antecedents as men and women of character and purpose, and we are very optimistic that you will do the job very well, congratulations,” Okolo was quoted as saying at the inauguration.
Members of the committee include Dr Okey Ewurum (Chairman), Prof. Obioma Njoku (Secretary), Dr Grace Ukeje, Mr Andrew Oru, Mr Emeka Anuforo and Dr Edith Nwosu.
Othere are Miss Chioma Onyenwe, Dr Chukwudi Anyanwu, Mr Nnamdi Okwuadibgo, Prof. Anene Moneke, Prof. Peter Onwualu and Prof. Nkeadi Onyegegbu.
In his response, Ewurum said it would be important to recognise the pioneer graduates because of their belief in the future of the university when other people were not confident of its survival.
“It was called a glorified secondary school because people thought it would collapse; so if the university survived, it was because of that first class who believed in its future,’’ the statement quoted Ewurum as saying.
Ewurum said the committee would work for the success of the event, and thanked the university administration for finding him and members of the committee worthy for the job. (NAN)
